Sustainable solutions that support biodiversity and long term value
Ecological Clerk of Works

An Ecological Clerk of Works, also known as an ECoW, acts as the eyes and ears of a project on the ground.

They ensure construction works are undertaken in accordance with environmental legislation and best practice.

The ECoW will also ensure that Environmental Protected Species licence methodology and mitigation, stakeholder or regulatory requirements and project plans and assessments are followed.

An ECoW on your site has the skills and experience of the construction environment, including the requirements and methodology of a scheme. They are used to communicating with a wide range of people and can confidently deliver toolbox talks.

Their flexible approach means they can adapt their way of working to suit changing methods and project conditions.

All ECoWs keep up to date with wildlife legislation to ensure that best practice is followed and that protected species remain protected.

Our friendly team of ecologists can visit your site during construction and speak directly with operatives and clients. They remain on site to ensure that the agreed environmental requirements are achieved and identify and resolve ecological issues that may arise during a project.

Throughout your project, our ecologists will support a range of activities including:

  • Production of, or input into, construction phase site documents
  • Construction Environmental Management Plans
  • Construction method statements
  • Permits to work
  • Ecological constraints plans
  • Habitat Management Plans or Landscape Environmental Management Plans
  • Pre-construction and construction phase checks for protected species and habitats
  • Ecological toolbox talks and inductions for contractors
  • Advice on the protection of ecological features and protected species
  • Implementation and maintenance of exclusion zones
  • Consultation with local planning authorities and statutory bodies
  • Discussion of construction works with relevant authorities
  • Ecological watching briefs during vegetation clearance, building renovation, demolition and habitat creation
  • Habitat enhancement, habitat management and restoration
  • Species translocation
  • Coordination of mitigation and protected species licence requirements
  • Pollution monitoring
  • Daily record keeping and document signing
  • Enforcement of pollution controls
  • Information for the public about potential disruption during works
